Aberdeen to manage multi-asset investments from Hong Kong

- Group

Aberdeen International Fund Managers Limited (‘Aberdeen’), the Hong Kong arm of the global asset manager, has announced that Irene Goh will be joining the company on 3 May 2016 in a new role as Head of Multi-Asset Solutions, Asia Pacific.

Goh, who has over 20 years’ experience in asset management, was most recently Head of Multi-Asset Investments, Asia Pacific at Alliance Bernstein. The Singaporean has also held posts at the Government Investment Corporation and UBS Global Asset Management.

Her recruitment signals Aberdeen’s determination to build a strong regional multi-asset business following the integration of Scottish Widows Investment Partnership in the UK just over two years ago.

That acquisition, which has since been enhanced by other hires, has given Aberdeen considerable heft in the asset class. As of 31 December 2015 its multi-asset investment solutions team based in the UK, Singapore and the US includes over 60 investment professionals managing GBP83.3 billion of client assets. The team is led globally by Archie Struthers, to whom Goh will report.

Goh will lead the regional effort to design and manage bespoke multi-asset solutions for retail and institutional distribution, as well as joining the multi-asset Outcome Oriented team responsible for the global flagship fund range of growth and income strategies, as the senior Asian regional representative. She will also have responsibility for building a regional multi-asset investment team.

Until now Aberdeen has distributed two multi-asset growth and income funds in Australia, for which it has a product specialist based in Sydney. It also distributes similarly managed Luxembourg-listed UCITS multi-asset growth and multi-asset income funds to private banks in Asia.

The company’s firm belief is that the multi-asset boom in Asia, as retail investors embrace outcome-oriented investing, for example in the form of income funds, is here to stay. It also sees additional growth in demand particularly in the form of bespoke insurance solutions as that sector struggles to meet liabilities; and broadly too among institutions that are looking for more outcome-led solutions.

Archie Struthers, Global Head of Investments Solutions, comments:
"I am delighted Irene has joined us. She brings both portfolio manager skills and a record of raising assets; her investment expertise and philosophy also dovetail with ours. We have high hopes to grow our Asian presence in multi-asset solutions – an area that has become increasingly relevant (and competitive) as clients seek new sources of return in this continued low interest rate, low growth environment."
